Newtown’s Christmas lights should all come on during the official launch next week following last year’s disappointment when some failed to illuminate.

Newtown Town Council said it has invested in the infrastructure of the Christmas lights which should mean they don’t trip off when switched on by Father Christmas next Friday.

“This year the Town Council has invested heavily on the Christmas lights infrastructure to make sure the lights are connected to a safe and reliable source of power,” said a spokesperson.

“The work carried about by Red Flame Electrical and SP Networks was completed at the beginning of November. This means that the Christmas lights should come on when the countdown reaches zero.”

The town’s “Kicking Off Christmas” event will see the Christmas lights switched on by Santa with Newtown's Mayor and Carnival Queen at 7pm on Friday, 25th November on The Bear Lanes Balcony.

The evening will start at 5pm on the stage in High Street, with performances from Maesyrhandir School Band, NYP Theatre Group and Adiict Dance.

At 6.30pm Santa's float will lead the procession from the Town Hall Gates via Back Lane and Broad Street to Bear Lanes.

Newtown Silver Band will accompany carol singing around the Christmas tree before the lights switch on at 7pm.

The evening's entertainment will continue in High Street until 9pm with The Smile and a special Fireshow from ZU Aerial.

“There will be produce stalls in High Street and charity stalls in Bear Lanes,” added a town council spokesperson.

For more information and stall booking forms, please call at the council offices at The Cross or contact Zak Howard on 01686 625544 or email zak.howard@newtown.org.uk

Santa's Grotto will be in Glanhafren Hall from 11am to 2pm on Saturdays 26th November, 10th and 17th December.
