Warning over increased fly tipping

19/08/2016 @ 09:41

Fly tipping in and around Newtown could escalate because Powys County Council is charging so much to collect bulky household items.

The warning comes from Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George, who said the issue of fly-tipping throughout the county could become worse because of the excessive charges.

Mr George has said that the charges for the collection of large household items in Powys were far above the Welsh average and is further concerned that higher rates could result in a further increase in fly-tipping in Powys.

The current charge for bulky household goods collection in Powys are £25 for up to six items, with a further £3 for each additional good after that.

This is the second highest rate by any local authority in Wales and more than double the rate of numerous other authorities around Wales.

Mr George has written to Powys County Council asking for assurances that collection rates will not be further increased.

Mr George said: “For too long, collection rates for bulky household goods in Powys have exceeded the national average.

“I have asked Powys County Council to provide assurances that collection rates for these goods will not be further increased in the future.

“I’m concerned that higher charges will further increase the risk of fly-tipping in Powys which is not only unsightly but poses significant environmental risks.”

Landowners and farmers in the Newtown area have already reported a rise in fly-tipping, as well as items being dumped in lay-bys and local countryside areas.
