Over 6,000 people have signed a Newtown petition for the reinstatement of a roundabout to solve the town's traffic chaos.
It will now be handed over to Welsh Assembly officials next month.
County Councillor Russell George launched the petition and says said waiting years for a new bypass could be too late for many business owners, who claim they will be driven out by worsening congestion.
Councillor George’s move comes after a set of traffic lights along Pool Road were installed last year to replace the roundabout when the Tesco superstore opened.
But businesses, residents and councillors claim congestion has got worse since the lights were put in.
He said: “I will be handing the petition over to the Welsh Assembly’s petitions committee on March 23 and I would welcome anyone to join me.
“The petition, which now has more than 6,000 signatures, is asking for a trial roundabout to be returned at the Kerry road junction and confirmation of an early start date and financial commitment to the Newtown bypass.
“The petition will be handed in on the steps of the Assembly building to officials and a delegation of Assembly members”
“The Welsh Assembly set up a committee to consider admissible petitions and to decide what action should be taken.
“The Assembly’s rules mean that any petition that the presiding officer decides is admissible must be considered by the Assembly.
“The committee does seem to have some teeth, as it also has the power to call ministers to give evidence and account for their actions.”
