Students are being given more and new powers to determine their way of life and learning at Newtown High School in a move described as “groundbreaking.”
The School Council, made up of students, staff and others, has approved changes to the way it works and represents students.
“The changes, which were student led, reform and change the School Council into a more representative Student Assembly while creating a central leadership group, appropriately named the Cabinet of the Assembly,” said a school spokesperson.
It is understood the Cabinet will make decisions that affect students, including its own budget.
Head teacher, Mr G Harkness, said: “Our School Council showed maturity and direction when voting and debating these changes.
“We as a school are incredibly excited to see what the new Student Assembly will do with their new powers and hope to see increased leadership opportunities through the Cabinet of the Assembly.”
Clerk to the Council, Mr R Williams, said: "This is a historic day for student participation across Newtown High School and students had a constructive and meaningful debate about the powers they should have to represent their fellow students."
