Maternity fight heads to stadium

While Newtown opens a second front on the war on service cuts today with a campaign to retain full time fire services, the crusade against maternity services moving from Shrewsbury to Telford has gathered pace.

The on-line petition to fight the transfer has reached 3,500 signatures in just over a week and this weekend capaigners will attend a mass protest taking place at Shrewsbury Town’s Football Stadium.

Public meetings to discuss the issue will be held later this month in Newtown and Welshpool and the petition’s founder, Newtown mum Helen Jervis, said she was “staggered” by the response which shows the "overwhelming support for services to remain".

The campaign has received cross-border support and the protest planned for the Stadium tomorrow night (Friday) is followed by a public meeting at 7pm.

Helen added: “If this proposal goes ahead and your little one is ill or you are expecting a baby, then it’s off to Telford you will go which is just not acceptable. It is placing lives at risk.”
