‘Party in the park’ to be one of the town’s biggest ever celebrations

Newtown is throwing a party to remember, and you’re all invited!

To celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Newtown will be holding a weekend celebration which is expected to bring the town together like never before.

The Bank Holiday weekend will start with a huge free party in the Town Hall Park on the day of the wedding itself on Friday, April 29 which has already been declared a national holiday.

Organisers are hoping to receive enough sponsorship and support to hire a big screen to show the event, with families encouraged to bring picnics and enjoy a host of activities on offer. The intention is to also hold a disco and bar in the evening.

Two days later and residents are in for a real treat with a historical fun day recreating scenes of yesteryear with re-enactments of wars and events that have shaped the town over the last 900 years. Again the park will be transformed into a family venue with a host of activities to entertain all ages.

“It will be a fantastic event and we urge the whole town to pull together and be proud of their town,” said Town Mayor Joy Jones. “We need a lot of support so please come forward and get involved. The Royal Wedding will be an historic event so we are inviting all Newtownians as well as people from outside of the town to come and enjoy and celebrate together.”

The Town Council will work closely with the Civic Society and the History Group to ensure the ‘Fun Day’ on May 1 encapsulates the story of Newtown. Organisers have also appealed for anyone with items covering the history of the town and Montgomeryshire to get in touch.

In the meantime, Cllr Jones has called for a DJ to volunteer their services for the two days and has also appealed for children’s entertainers to step forward. Anyone interested in getting involved in the weekend’s organisation should contact the Town Council at the Chambers.
