Newtown woman selected for Assembly list

08/02/2011 @ 05:24

Gemma Bowker has been selected as a list Assembly Candidate for Mid and West Wales.

She lives in Newtown with her husband Dominic who works for Control Techniques.

Gemma, 32, says: "I will be working closely with Montgomeryshire Assembly Candidate Wyn Williams.

"I am particularly concerned about proposed changes to health care in the local area and will be campaigning to ensure that local views are taken into account."

Gemma is lobbying alongside Wyn against proposals by the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Trust to move maternity services and the special care baby unit from Shrewsbury to Telford.

She adds: "This is a decision that would lead to even longer journeys to hospital for many Montgomeryshire residents and ambulance response times would rise, something that could put lives at risk.

"As a young woman this issue is something that affects me both personally and politically.

"It is vitally important that parents and their children are provided with the best possible care and support.

"With Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust receiving around £20 million a year to provide care for Powys residents, it is important that they take notice of the impact policies can have here. I fully support Wyn's efforts on behalf of the people of Mid-Wales to prevent this proposal from being enacted."

Gemma Bowker has previously served as a Town Councillor in Sandbach, Cheshire. She graduated in 2009 with a PhD from Manchester University and currently works online for a news agency from home in Newtown, having been employed by the company for nine years.

She moved to Montgomeryshire a year and a half ago with her husband and describes Newtown as welcoming and friendly.
