Gas alert after mains water pipe burst

04/02/2015 @ 05:32

Emergency services were today called out to a suspected gas leak after a mains water supply burst on the Mochdre Industrial Estate, swamping the road as drains blocked and debris was washed towards the main A483 roundabout.

Callers to the emergency services reported a smell of gas after the water main burst at around 1pm, sending a torrent of water down the main industrial estate road towards the A483 roundabout.

A specialist gas crew was called to the scene to investigate, although it is understood there was no major gas leak.

A fire crew from Newtown managed to unblock drains on the road which had caused the water from the mains supply to swamp the industrial estate road, flowing down and closing the road for a time by police.

Crews from Powys County Council were also called in to clear drains and help with a clean up operation while police were on hand to deal with traffic issues.

Gas and water officials have been at the scene all afternoon investigating the water burst and the smell of gas which was reported.

Several hundred homes in Newtown were affected by the mains water burst, with many cut of completely or with a low pressure.

Several people contacted MyNewtown saying they didn't have water for time.
