Craig Williams named as the man to replace Glyn Davies

A Welshpool man in the Conservative choice to defend the Montgomeryshire seat at the next General Election.

Montgomeryshire members this afternoon selected former Cardiff North MP Craig Williams to be their candidate at the next election following the decision by Glyn Davies not to defend his seat.

In a statement just released the Montgomeryshire Conservatives Association said: “We are pleased to confirm that Craig Williams has been selected as our candidate to be the next MP for Montgomeryshire. We are delighted that Craig will continue Glyn’s fight for local services and making sure the challenges of a rural area are not forgotten in Westminster.”

Mr Williams is the son of David and Andrea Williams from Greenfields, Welshpool and a former pupil of Gungrog Road, Ysgol Maesydre and Welshpool High School.

He studied at Walford College and Birmingham University before moving into politics as a researcher at the Welsh Assembly Government.

He served as  MP for Cardiff North from 2015-2017, during which time he served as PPS to David Gauke,  and was unfortunate to lose his seat despite increasing his vote. Since April of this year he has been a Special Adviser to the Brexit Secretary.

He stood against Rhodri Morgan in the 2007 Welsh Assembly elections, cut his political teeth as a Cardiff City Councillor from 2008-2015, and contested the Cardiff South and Penarth by-election in 2012 before succeeding Jonathan Evans as MP for Cardiff North.

Mr Williams currently lives in Llanfair Caereinion.
