Plans to merge Llanidloes high school and primary school has entered consultation.
Governors are proposing to merge the schools so that they operate as a federation from September 2019.
The schools are situated next to each other and already work closely together.
The federation would strengthen the links and allow greater collaboration, according to the governors.
"We believe that federation will help us meet the diverse needs of our pupils even more effectively," a consultation document states.
The consultation will end on 25 January 2019.
