Toys and tins Christmas appeal launched

14/11/2018 @ 09:12

A Christmas toys and tins appeal has today been launched in Newtown.

The Salvation Army launches appeal will run until Wednesday, 19th December 2018.

The public in Newtown are being urged to donate gifts and toys for children and young people who otherwise would have little or nothing on Christmas morning.

Church leader Sam Jones, said: “During the festive season, when many are enjoying celebrations with friends and family, others are struggling to make ends meet, often through no fault of their own.

"Last year we met people who were struggling following workplace accidents, recent bereavement and relationship breakdowns”.

“Our team of volunteers will be out delivering your generous Christmas gifts to those who might otherwise go without.

“The Christmas Story inspires us as a church to reach out to those in need, so we’re running the Christmas Toy and Tins Appeal to ensure every child gets a present and meal on Christmas Day.”

From Wednesday 14th November, members of the public are asked to drop off a new unwrapped gift for a child aged 0-16 years.

This forms the basis of our toy appeal. Additionally, we invite donations of tinned and Christmas food items.

All donations of both toys and food items can be delivered to its charity shop and prayer space at 7-8 Market Street.

Local Salvation Army representatives will then distribute them to children and families in need in the area through their own networks, local groups and social services.

Nicola Wain, Community Development Worker said, “Last year we delivered 220 toy parcels and 110 food hampers to families in need.  It is heart-warming to see children’s faces light up when they open their Christmas presents.

"If you have children, grandchildren or children you support, think of what they might like in their Christmas stocking and consider buying an extra present and donating it.  We’re asking for brand new toys or gifts so the families we support feel extra special."

Sam Jones added: “We have our annual Carol Service on 23rd December at 10.30 a.m. at Trehafren meeting hall.

"This is a family-friendly service and everyone is welcome to stay for a mince pie and cuppa afterwards.  It will be a great festive occasion and we’d love to see you there."

"Thanks to the amazing support of the people of Newtown and the surrounding area, The Salvation Army here in Newtown is able to distribute toys and food hampers to many families who might otherwise struggle at Christmas."
