Call for HGVs to be banned from town centre

22/07/2017 @ 11:05

HGV's over 7.5 tons could be banned from Newtown town centre if a town councillor has his way.

On Monday night, town councillors will hear a motion by a colleague calling for such large vehicles to be restricted from entering the town once the bypass is built, except for access.

Cllr Geoff Parsons, who is also pushing a motion to have electric points put into town car parks for recharging electric cars, will put his idea to colleagues at the town council meeting.

While the town council does not have powers over highways, if the motion is passed they could make the recommendation to Powys County Council and the Welsh Government.

His motion states: "This council requests to the highways authority that after the bypass is opened all HGVs entering town from the bypass junctions be restricted to a maximum weight of 7.5 tons for access."

Councillors will listen to his rationale and then decide if to support it.
