Save our day centre campaign takes place tonight

A public meeting takes place this evening to discuss the possible closure of Newtown’s Park Street Day Centre.

Powys County Council is reviewing day care activities for the elderly which could include closing the day centre.

A consultation is currently being carried out by the council on the future of day care activity provision and it has highlighted the closure of day centres as one of the options as part of £1.193m savings needed by 2017/2018.

The Park Street Day Centre has been facing a tough future for over two years, but has constantly received the backing of residents and campaigners.

The public meeting will be held Newtown Library this evening between 6.30pm and 8pm.

Cllr Joy Jones, who has campaigned to retain the day centre since initial concerns were raised about its future last year, said: “We’ve had a lot of interest in the meeting and I’d urge as many people to attend to discuss the situation and demonstrate the amount of concern about what might happen to the day centre if the council’s plans go ahead.”
