Police have launched a campaign to target thieves and criminals in Newtown in the lead up to Christmas, warning residents and shoppers to be on their guard.
Police said there has been a spate of purses and mobile phones being stolen from bags and cars in the force area and urged Christmas shoppers to be extra vigilant.
There have been a few cases in parts of the force of theft occurring, in particular of purses and smartphones.
And even though these cases are few and far between, we’re reminding shoppers to take extra care,” said Inspector John Tatton.
“The shops are very busy in our towns at this time of year, and everyone is in a hurry. But a few simple steps will prevent you being a target for thieves.
“First of all, keep an eye on your bag and your wallet when out shopping.
"Make sure you keep your purse or wallet somewhere close to your body where you can feel it and when you take your shopping to your car put it out of site, don’t leave it on the car seats.
“If you need to take money out from a cash point machine, make sure you shield your PIN number and put the money away quickly and securely. Be vigilant.”
He also urged shoppers not to leave presents or goods on view in parked cars. If you’re out Christmas shopping then store those presents out of sight and lock them away in the boot. Thieves will be looking out for an easy target – don’t make yourself one.
“Finally think about parking in well-lit areas and avoid isolated or dimly lit areas. Following these simple steps and you’ll hopefully have a merry and crime free Christmas.”

Police have also warned residents about the dangers of online shopping.
Inspector Tatton said: “It’s also worth thinking about online security too, as many of us choose to do our Christmas shopping on the internet. Shop only with online retailers you know about. Or research them first to ensure they are reputable and reliable. Make sure that your credit card details will be encrypted securely before being sent across the internet and never give out passwords.
“It is also important to remember to register your valuables. If the worst happens and you’re burgled but the police recover the stolen items they will search the immobilise database and return the goods to the rightful owners.”
