Newtown wool appeal to help elderly

18/11/2013 @ 06:56

You've most likely heard about a campaign to make mini woollen hats to go on bottles produced by a national drinks company. But did you know the original idea came from a Newtown-based charity?

Now Age Cymru Powys (previously known as Age Cymru) is appealing for people to donate woollen balls to help volunteers produce more woolly hats for innocent drinks which means they get 25p donated to the charity for each hat - as part of the Big Knit campaign.

The original idea came several years ago from the Montgomeryshire branch of the national charity which is based in Severn Street, Newtown and now it's gone national, inspiring people to make whacky mini woollen hats for the company's drink bottles.

Former trustee of the charity, Fredas Davies, told MyNewtown: "I have just spoken to Sandra in the office and she has told me that they are desperate for more knitting wool. Preferably double knitting wool to help raise funds and to keep their knitters busy.

"If you have any oddments or balls of wool, please drop off at the office at 11/12 Severn Street, Newtown between 9-12am Monday to Thursday or telephone 01686 623707. All knitting wool will be very much  appreciated."

This winter Age Cymru has launched a "SPREAD THE WARMTH" check for older people.
There are leaflets, benefit help, grants and room thermometers free if you call into the Newtown office during open hours. Don't be left in the cold this winter.
