Newtown's Broad Street or High Street could be pedestrianised on Market Days as part of a proposal put forward by the toewn council.
One of the streets could be closed to traffic initially on Tuesdays' in the new year, with the aim of making it permanent at some point in the future.
The town council will ask the public, businesses and traders for their comments before they seek approval from Powys County Council to implement the temporary order with the aim of making it permanent if successful.
It is understood the proposal is part of wider plans by the town council to improve public access to retailers as part of a drive to drum up town centre business.
The roads are often closed for events in the town, including the forthcoming Christmas festivities and lights switch on.
Over the years there have been various proposals to pedestrianise parts of the town, none of which have reached fruition. However, it is understood town councillors are keen to see this through in an attempt to improve the viability of the town centre and to attract more people into it.
The public consultation will begin shortly, although one of the roads could be closed on a Tuesday market day on a trial basis as early as the new year.
