The Oriel Davies Gallery in Newtown is to launch a new winter exhibition next month.
The gallery celebrates stunning new craft through the exhibition, Portal. This showcase of new graduate work introduces some of the most exciting talent to emerge in contemporary craft in 2013. Collectively the artists present an exhibition that is beautiful, delicate, daring and original, signposting the way for the applied arts of tomorrow.
Presented within Portal are newly-commissioned works showcasing two inspirational makers from last year’s exhibition Look West. "Jeweller Carrie Dickens and textile artist Sian O’Doherty were selected by Oriel Davies and Llantarnam Grange on the basis of the originality, strength and potential of their practice. The commissions offered the opportunity after graduation towards the development of their work and professional practice," said a gallery spokesperson.
The exhibition features a diverse range of extraordinary pieces. From jewellery to assemblage, from ceramics to textiles and from wood to 3D printing, each exhibitor is characterized by clear dedication to their chosen craft, high level of skill, and ability in leading the way for a new generation of makers.
"Visitors will be able to enjoy innovative new work coupled with the opportunity to purchase unique collectable pieces for either themselves or as special gifts for family and friends from these rising stars on show," added the spokesperson.
Artists featured include: Penny Allen, Anne Blades, Luisa Cacciotti, Rachel Cartledge, Debbie Claxton, Danielle Davies, Carrie Dickens, Chloe Emma, Katie Gamble, Sally Garner, Harriet King, Rhona McCallum, Kelly Munro, Corin Nesbit, Sian O’Doherty, Katie Owen, Helen Edith Pritchard, Will Schofield, Liv Thrane and Penny Wheeler
Developed in collaboration with Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre whose New Graduates Show, Portal has been an important platform for new makers since 2009.
The exhibition will be launched on Saturday, 16th November between 3pm and 5pm.
