Refurbished Post Office opens

Newtown Post Office has been offically re-opened after undergoing a significant refurbishment.

The Post Office in Shortbridge Street was closed for two weeks last month as part of a modernisation programme and there were celebrations as Montgomeryshire's AM and MP, Russell George and Glyn Davies, joined staff to formally re-open the office.

Kelly Nijjer, Operator of Newtown Post Office said: “We are delighted with the refurbishment and have already had lots of good and positive comments from our customers.

"They love the new open plan style and say how refreshing it is to be able to have a real conversation with the staff as the glass partition no longer gets in the way”.

He added: “Nine staff members work here and they are also very pleased with the new layout and style of the Post Office. It makes it much easier to ensure we’re meeting the customers’ needs.”

Mr Davies said he was pleased to see new investment in the Post Office. “It is great to see that the Post Office is willing to invest significantly in Newtown and the surrounding area at a time when other financial services are closing rural branches.

“The Newtown Post Office is relied upon by many residents for providing integral services, and the new open-plan branch will see improved services as well as longer Saturday opening hours, which will be of huge benefit to many of its customers.  The Post Office’s commitment to a no more branch closure programme is fantastic news for all local communities, of which the Post Office remains a vital staple.”

Mr George said: “I am extremely pleased to be re-launching the Post Office in Newtown after its renovation.  The Post Office network still plays a very important part in the lives of Welsh people and it’s tremendous to have this well used office refreshed and rejuvenated.  Providing modern, accessible public facilities, is vital to not only encourage more people to use the network but more importantly, to do more of their business within the town."

Post Office Regional Network Manager, Adrian Wales said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in the area and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future”

This modernisation is part of a three-year investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, that will see around 6000 branches (about half the Post Office network) converting to new-style branches.”
