15/08/2013 @ 11:28

Newtown High School has recorded its best ever A-level, Welsh Baccalaureate and Level 3 results, with a 100 per cent pass rate achieved by Year 13 pupils.

The news comes as Powys County Council revealed that almost everyone who took an A-level in the county passed (99 per cent), although the figures county-wide are not as good as last year and fewer students yook A-levels in the county this year.

The school, which has already been identified as being one of the best in Wales, reported the results today as pupils throughout Montgomeryshire receive their A-level results.

"Our extended curriculum has again proven a successful choice for students wishing to combine a range of Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma Courses with their A-level studies, 50 per cent of entries achieved the top Distinction and Distinction Star grades," said Headteacher, Mrs J Pryce.

Notable performances include Keri Trigg who attained the Welsh Baccalaureate and five A-Levels at AAAAB grades, and India Jones who attained the Welsh Baccalaureate, two Distinction Stars and two A grade A-Levels.

"Our More able and Talented students, who receive additional provision, have done exceptionally well. Basil Mustafa in particular at the end of Year 12 has attained an A* in A-Level Mathematics and 3As at AS-Level. One Year 11 pupil, Cherie Bridges has achieved ABBC at AS-Level a year early and is now following A2 courses," added Mrs Pryce.

However, across Powys, the highest A-level grades A* to A were at 22 per cent, whcih is lower than 2012 and mirrors the all-Wales trend. The results at grades A* - C and A* - E (99 per cent) were also slightly lower than last year.

However, Powys WJEC results at grades A* - C are more than two per cent higher than the all-Wales figure and one per cent higher than in England.

The number of WJEC A-levels taken in Powys schools has fallen slightly from 1,241 in 2012 to 1,229 in 2013 which represents a decrease of just 1%.  In 2012, WJEC entries represented approximately 77% of the total A-level entries in Powys.

Cllr Myfanwy Alexander, Cabinet Member for Learning, said: “These are excellent results clearly reflecting the dedication and hard work of pupils and teachers in Powys schools.  Our warm congratulations go to all the young people on their well deserved achievements and to all those who have supported them throughout their school careers.  We wish all the students every success for the future.”
