Have some pride in your town

Rubbish has been left strewn in a Newtown housing estate, with glass and other rubbish risking children's safety, as residents criticise the council for not coming to clear it up sooner.

It is understood a number of residents have thrown old mattresses, toys and other items into a communal area around Skylark Avenue in Maesyrhandir and despite other residents calling Powys County Counci to clear it up, it was only today after MyNewtown called the council for a comment that the rubbish was taken away.

Two residents contacted MyNewtown about the situation, both of whom wished to remain anonymous. One said: "It's disgraceful and disgusting. Someone has just dumped the rubbish in the street without a care for anyone else or a sense of pride in their own neighbourhood."

Another said rubbish had been mounting for over a week and despite calls to the county council, nobody had cleared the rubbish which included broken glass and other materials.

"Most people round here abide by the recycling that was introduced but there seems to be a lot of fly tipping," she said.

Judging by photographs taken by one resident, much of the rubbish could have been recycled at the town's recycling depot, but it's obvious they couldn't be bothered, instead dumping it in the street for others to deal with.

While the county council cannot be blamed for the fly-tipping, residents have criticised the time it has taken to clear the rubbish after being alerted to it. "Children are playing around here because it's the summer holidays and some of this stuff is dangerous, particularly the broken glass."

What do you think about fly-tipping in your community? Why should you have to put up with other people's rubbish. Have your say on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/mynewtown or interact via Twitter @my_newtown or www.twitter.com/my_newtown.
