Paddleboarding down the river

04/04/2013 @ 06:31

You might see an unusual sight coming down the River Severn through Llanidloes, Newtown and Welshpool later this month when a team of four friends attempt to travel from the source to the sea on paddleboards.

Paddleboarders on the River SevernThe team of four, made up of Tristan Bawn, Rob Yates, Dean Broad and Tony Bain, plus support driver George Bush, will be attempting to paddle from the source of the River Severn to the sea on inflatable Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs).

Their adventure will start on 20th April and the team plans to complete the 220 mile journey in nine days, starting at the source of the Severn, high in the Cambrian mountains near Hafren Forest.

The team will walk and cycle from the source until the water is deep enough to begin paddleboarding. Their journey will take them through four counties, finally arriving at Severn Area Rescue Association station in Sharpness on April 28.

The team will be attempting to break the British SUP distance record, and potentially achieve a world record if water levels allow.

“We’re just four friends who are connected by our love of water sports and the River Severn and who like doing things just a little different,” said Tristan.

“We’ve been training hard over the last few months because the River Severn is not to be underestimated. We’ll be facing all manner of dangers along the way. Rapids, waterfalls, muddy banks, whirlpools and, of course, the Severn Bore! Its not going to be easy, but we’re really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

The team will also use their challenge to raise awareness of the array of wildlife on the Severn and highlight the importance of the river, its surroundings and the communities along it.

You can help the team raise money for their charities by sponsoring them. Help the team help others by visiting their Virgin Money Giving page. All money raised will go to Cancer Research UK, Parkinson’s UK, Macmillan Cancer Support and Severn Area Rescue Association.

The team’s paddle boards have kindly been provided by the Red Paddle Company and KHS Mountain Bikes by Green Dragon Activities at Llanwrtyd Wells.
