New town clerk sought

18/09/2012 @ 01:48

The search is on for a new Town Clerk to support the work of the town council, replacing outgoing clerk, Steve Gearey.

The Town Council has advertised the post which involves managing the day-to-day operations of the town council and its financial affairs, with a salary of between £32,800 and £35,430.

“An exceptional individual is needed to fill this role, with vision, a proactive apporach, excellent verbal and communication skills, and IT capabilities,” states the advertisement.

It adds: “The ability to guide and implement council policies, in particular the promotion and regeneration of Newtown is essential.”

Any candidate is expected to come under pressure to ensure the council, led by Mayor Cllr Val Howard and 15 other councillors, helps support the regeneration of the town centre which has seen more shop closures in the past 18 months than for many years.

While many people do not necessarily understand the role of the Town Council, it manages many public spaces and buildings in the town and can comment on planning applications in the town that go to Powys County Council for consideration.

It also manages the town’s street market after taking responsibility from the county council.

While the council itself only meets once a month, the full-time role of town clerk involves managing staff, the council finances and administration.
