It’s going to be full steam ahead on The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway over the school Easter holidays – even if coal supplies are limited.
To allow the railway to run sustainably into the future, various alternatives to traditional Welsh coal are now being trialled. At present the trial is of a new coal, known as e-coal and it will be interesting to see if passengers can tell the difference.
Starting on April 9 trains will run once again along the whole line with departures at 11.15 and 14.05 from Raven Square Station, Welshpool. It is a good idea to book in advance, though last minute tickets might be available on some days. The website will show if certain trains have low availability or are sold out.
The long-awaited reopening of the traditional tearoom featuring homemade cakes and bara brith in Llanfair Station will also be a tasty highlight for visitors. There is plenty of outdoor covered seating and even a hot food offering from Nerys’s popular food van.
Trains will run throughout the Easter school holidays and on most days for the rest of the season. “The Carrot Express” will be running for the Easter weekend (15th to 18th April) with special treats for younger passengers, all arranged by the Easter Bunny, who will be there too.
