Wyndham is remembered with memorial bench

A well-known local resident and carpenter who died in 2020 has been remembered with a memorial chair in the town.

Wyndham Edwards, who lived and worked in Crescent Street for 70 years, has had a bench on the Crescent Street roundabout dedicated to him with a memorial plaque.

"After contacting the Council, Sue Breeze daughter of Wyndham Edwards enquired whether the benches which look over Crescent Roundabout with a distant view of Newtown could have a memorial plaque fitted in memory of her father," said a town council spokesperson.

"It was perfect timing for the benches which needed restoration to be removed and transformed by the Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council outdoor operative team to be given a new lease of life."

The town council has over 60 benches around Newtown which at some point in their life span will require maintenance and refurbishment. Each winter season several benches are removed from locations for the essential upkeep required. 

Mr Edwards was a local and well-respected member of the community. He worked as a local carpenter, with his workshop just a short distance away from the roundabout.

"It seemed a fitting tribute in his memory. Right up until his sudden stroke, Wyndham could be found busy in his workshop planning his next project." 

Cllr John Byrne, Chair of Services Committee, said: “It was lovely idea of the family to have a plaque on this bench in Wyndham’s memory, so close to where he lived and worked. On behalf of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council I am pleased we have been able to fulfil the request and thank our team for an excellent refurbishment of the bench.
