Olympic street party in Llani

Powys is to host a a pre-Olympic Games street sports party in Llanidloes next year, it has been announced by Powys County Council.

The event will promote the London 2012 games and create a lasting Olympic legacy for the county, according to to the council.

A wide range of street sport activities will be staged in Llanidloes on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th, June 2012. Organisations from across the county will be involved including youth, community arts, leisure, voluntary sectors and the police.

Activities will include street basketball, BMX, canoe slalom, cheerleading, free running, raft building, high ropes challenge, mountain biking, power kites sailing and skateboarding.

Councillor Stephen Hayes, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, explained: "We want the Olympics to be a catalyst for young people to get active. For this event we are deliberately promoting activities away from traditional sports to encourage as many people as possible to get involved and benefit from the legacy of the Olympic Games."
