Council meetings postponed as a mark of respect

Newtown Town Council has postponed all of its meetings until the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh has taken place.

A services committee meeting had been due to take place last night. But hours earlier the Town Cllrk, Ed Humphreys, emailed councillors to say it would be postponed as part of the council's protocols on the death of a senior person of state.

He said: '"Following the announcement of the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the Town Council has implemented its protocol for the death of a senior person of state, which was approved by Council in Sep'2019.

"One of the provisions is that council and committee meetings are cancelled until the day after the funeral.

"The funeral of the Duke is on this coming Saturday afternoon therefore, the Services Committee meeting which was scheduled for this evening is cancelled."
