An idea by a Llandinam holiday provider to give medical staff who work on COVID-19 wards some free weekend breaks has taken off with more than 20 holiday providers backing it.
Mid Wales Holidays for Heroes Collective was the idea of Rachael Harris, who has holiday accommodation in the Newtown area and whose sister is a nurse.
Along with her niece they launched the project to provide free breaks to medical staff who have been working on COVID-19 wards.
"The project was inspired initially by my sister, herself a nurse though not working on a covid ward," said Rachael.
"The concern that we had as a family for her potentially, at some stage, having to work on one of these wards inspired us to give away mini breaks in our two holiday accommodations.
"My niece then became further inspired and after a brief discussion we then contacted as many Mid Wales holiday providers as we could in the hope of getting many more holidays to offer."
Rachael added: "We now have 23 holiday providers across offering 31 breaks to those who have worked on a COVID-19 dedicated ward or ICU during the pandemic.
"Each day in June (and one day in July) we will be raffling one holiday and the response on Instagram and Facebook has been really positive, to date we have had 14 winners who will, when able have holidays in luxury bed and breakfast, shepherds huts, bunkhouses, cottages and lodges throughout the area.
"We have had reports that the daily raffle has become a bit of an event on wards and we now would love to have many more holidays to offer. So if there are any holiday providers who would like to get involved we would be very grateful for their contact."
