Want to be a town councillor?

06/11/2019 @ 11:06
An opportunity has arisen for a local resident to be co-opted on to Newtown Town Council.

A vacancy for the North Ward was advertised last month but lack of interest meant an election was not called.

Now the town council is seeking to 'co-opt' someone on to the council for the ward.

"The ‘casual vacancy’ was recently advertised but no election has been called so it falls to the Town Council to select a new member," said a council spokesperson.

"This is known as co-option. The term of office is to May 2022 when the next local council elections will take place.  Expressions of interest are now being invited.

"Applicants must be over 18 years of age; a British, Commonwealth, Irish or EU citizen; a Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn elector or have worked in the area for the preceding 12 months; or have occupied land or other premises as owner or tenant, or lived in the town or within 4.8 kilometres of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn during the same period."

He added: "No formal qualifications are required and the Town Council is made of people from all walks of life with various backgrounds.

"What you do need however, is a passion for Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn and its community with a commitment to attend various meetings to make your voice heard."

A council statement said: "The aim of the Town Council is to sustain Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn as a great place to live, learn, work and visit.  The Town Council’s task therefore is to engage with the local community, to consider the needs and wishes of residents, and to try, whenever and wherever it can lawfully do something about them.

"If it’s not within the remit of the Town Council to directly help, then it might be to support and lobby on behalf of local residents."

If you require any more information please contact Ed Humphreys, Town Clerk, on 01686 625544 or email townclerk@newtown.org.uk or drop into the Council Offices at Brisco House, The Cross, Broad Street.

"Being a Town Councillor is a big responsibility but can be incredibly rewarding. If you are interested then Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council wishes to hear from you by 5pm Monday 18th November 2019," added the spokesperson.
