A £430,000 scheme to create a community-owned hydro generator on the River Severn at Newtown is seeking community support to help attract cash from a nationwide funding scheme.

Newtown2020, an organisation aiming to turn Newtown into a ‘green’ superpower, is signing a 40-year agreement with British Waterways to lease Penarth Weir (pictured) on the outskirts of the town. A feasibility study has shown that the community-led project could generate up to £100k of revenue a year.
The group is now trying to raise cash from Energyshare and needs members of the community to back the scheme in order to help it clinch the cash.
"I've set up our Newtown Hydro project on Penarth Weir on the Energyshare website - which is a scheme that promotes community renewable energy generation and provides funding for groups," said Jeremy Thorp of Newtown2020. "To be in the best position to get some funding, we need to demonstrate that we have plenty of community support for the scheme.
He said members of the public can register with the site as a supporter by going to the following link.
"You will also be able to keep up to date with the project through this website, and find out about other similar projects. energyshare is a community. It brings people together in person and online, to challenge the status quo and get more control over where your energy comes from, how much you use, and how much you pay for it," he added.
