Newtown Football Club has suffered a triple blow this week with the loss of two ex-players and a former club official.

The club took to social media to report the death of former goalkeeper and player/coach John Smout. Smout left the cub in 1965 to start a professional career with Crystal Palace and went on to make 75 appearances for Exeter City before rejoining the Robins.

He was also an accomplished cricketer for both Newtown and Montgomeryshire where he was recognised as both a batsman and wicket keeper.

The club also confirmed he death of Brian Jones. The statement read:

“It was also with great sadness that we also heard of the passing of Brian Jones affectionately known as "Titty".
“Brian played for Newtown Reserves but quickly became a first team regular where he was renowned for his pace and skills and a great favourite of the Latham Park faithful.”

The loss of the former players was closely followed by news of the death of former club official John Harris.

The statement said: Very sad to hear of the death of John Harris. John was an avid Newtown (and Plymouth Argyle) fan joining the club in 1982, spending much of his time helping out behind the bar, progressing to be the Chairman of the social club for many years and eventually a lifetime member.”

The club statement offered condolences to the families of the trio.
