Helping to make dreams come true for Rhys

Two local men will be undertaking a massive challenge later this summer to raise money for a youngster with muscular dystrophy who has made himself a bucket list.

Warren Sherwood will be joined by friend Gideon Berends-Sheriff for the 220-mile challenge in the hope of raising £2,000 that will help 12-year-old Rhys Jones make his dreams come true.

Rhys (pictured) is the nephew of Warren who is from Newtown but is also well known in the Welshpool area where his partner Leanne Davies lives.

“One of the things Rhys would love to do is swim with dolphins, another is to watch his beloved Liverpool play along with loads of other things,” said Warren.

“Any donation will be massively appreciated by myself and Gideon to making his dreams come true.”

Warren explained that there are seven types of muscular dystrophy and the one that Rhys has is Duchenne, which has a life expectancy in the late 20’s to early 30’s.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of inherited genetic conditions that gradually cause the muscles to weaken, leading to an increasing level of disability.

It is a progressive condition, which means it gets worse over time. It often begins by affecting a particular group of muscles, before affecting the muscles more widely.

There’s no cure for MD, but treatment can help to manage many of the symptoms.

“We will raise this money by hiring a kayak and take on the whole length of the River Severn from source to mouth,” added Warren. “That is a massive 220 miles, we are hoping to do this in eight days.

“We will walk from the source to Llanidloes and then cycle to Newtown as the river will be low that time of year which could cause damage to the kayak. We will be staying at B&Bs along the route and will have my step dad who is a fireman meeting us at checkpoints for health and safety reasons.”
