Two family support centres will be moved into one single location next month, it has been confirmed.
Newtown Integrated Family Centre and the Skylark Family Centre will move to the former Dafydd Llwyd Primary school site.
"The Newtown Integrated Family Centre will continue be a one stop shop providing services to support families’ learning, social care and health needs," said a Powys County Council spokesperson.
The centre provides activities such as parent and toddler groups, baby massage, information, Incredible Years Parenting Training programmes, health advice, family support and counselling.
The Integrated Family Centre is currently on the edge of Newtown at the Mochdre Industrial estate. The Skylark Family Centre will also move to the new location ensuring additional support agencies for families are in one place.
Powys County Council’s Cabinet member for Youth, Children, Libraries and Leisure Services, Cllr Rachel Powell says: “This is an exciting move for the staff and families we support. We welcome this Flying Start funding which will enable the move of two family support centres in to one central location next to Hafren and Ladywell schools. This will be much more sustainable going forward and easier for families to access the support they need.”
Head of Children’s Public Health Nursing and Paediatric Services for Powys Teaching Health Board, Helen James says: “The new premises will enable continuation of the integrated working which is an essential component of the Flying Start model. This location will enable families to access support and services in a more convenient setting.”
Action for Children’s Chris Dunne adds; “This is a great opportunity to pull the teams together in a fantastic building in the heart of the community we all support.”
Construction company EvaBuild has started work on the site of the old Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd site on park street in Newtown and is on schedule to deliver the project on time.
A number of professionals such as health visitors, Powys County Council’s Community Advisory Teachers, childcare specialists and Action for Children, will work alongside each other at the centre to support the needs of families in the area.
Welsh Government awarded a grant of £257,000 to move and upgrade the centres to create this Flying Start hub in the new central location. The new centre is on schedule to open its doors to families in the summer.
