Plastic protest held at town supermarket

11/02/2018 @ 11:40

A protest was staged at Newtown’s Tesco store yesterday (Saturday) to highlight the amount of plastic used by shops for packaging.

The protest was part of the Free Plastic Powys campaign. The campaign is coordinated by Plaid Cymru and Green county councillors Elwyn Vaughan and Emily Durrant.

The group leader, Cllr Elwyn, said: “Common sense says there's far too much use of plastic which creates problems for households, the environment and our authority in having to dispose of it.

“When you see bananas, swedes,no cucumbers, all with natural packaging provided by nature in plastic packaging you know it's gone too far. Let's get back to basics and closer to nature.

“I’m pleased to say that staff at Tesco were very positive and understanding and we will be having a further meeting with them as a result to discuss practical steps for the future in order to lessen the dependency on this 21st Century scurge.”

Nobody from Tesco was available for comment.
