Young engineers blast off

Youngsters were able to enjoy one of the last days of their Christmas holidays by taking part in a Rocket Making Day in Montgomery.

Over 20 young people took up the opportunity with organisers Mid Wales Manufacturing Group.

The day was arranged to support the Futureproofing Engineering Skills Provision in Powys Project which is supported by Powys County Council.

The aim of this project is to ensure the future growth and development of the manufacturing and engineering sector in Powys by helping to address the skills and training barriers being faced by the industry.

Manufacturing & Engineering in Powys employs over 5000 people, by employee numbers and the industry is facing a skills shortage.

The day had young people aged from 10 – 15 years and they were separated into two groups and during the session participants learnt how to build a strong but light frame, designed their own aerodynamic body prototypes and explored the mechanics of flight.

The day ended with parents and supporters gathering to watch the rockets being launched, all 22 rockets launched successfully.

Cllr Martin Weale, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning, said: “Engaging young people at an early age and providing an insight into the industry locally and the opportunities is vital to addressing the skills needs of local engineering and manufacturing companies.”

Mid Wales Manufacturing Group and Myrick Training are hoping the successful day can be repeated later in the year.
