A Newtown based credit union has been praised by an AM for reaching out to local community and school children.

Joyce Watson, AM for Mid and West Wales, visited Cambrian Credit Union in Broad Street to see the work undertaken by the organisation.

She was told about the Credit Union’s work in promoting saving to local school children while also supporting local people and businesses.

Joyce met Business Development Officer Zoe Greenslade and Sandy Williams, Business Development Manager and was able to announce that Credit Unions across Wales have been awarded £422,334 during 2017-18.

Communities and Children Secretary in the Welsh Government, Carl Sargeant, has said that the funding will help credit unions support people who are struggling to manage their money.

Joyce Watson went on to point out that credit unions are ideally placed through their relationships with local employers, schools and other community organisations to help strengthen the financial resilience of communities.

She said: “In reaching out to local schools credit unions help to encourage a savings habit from an early age.”
