You may have heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest production of 'The Wizard of Oz' opened in London's West End last week, but Newtown will be staging its very own version at Theatr Hafren later this month!
The performance by the Newtown Musical Theatre Company takes place from Wednesday March 30 to Saturday April 2, with an additional matinee performance at 2.30pm on the Saturday.
Based on the well-loved film, the show features all the well-known songs, including 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', 'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead' and 'We're Off to See the Wizard'.
The part of Dorothy will be shared by two local schoolgirls. Josephine Bowen, who lives in Newtown and attends Caereinion High School, will play the part on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening, and Katy Collins, who lives in Montgomery and attends Newtown High School, will play the part on Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon. They will be joined by Bertie the dog, who will play the part of Toto in all performances.
The other main parts will be played by Andrew Bond (Scarecrow), Gareth McMurdo (Tinman), John Bowen (Lion), Bev Southall (Wicked Witch), Adele Hokins (Glinda), Les Skilton (Guard) and Mike Clarke (Wizard). With a cast of around 45, other cameo parts will be played by members of the company, who will also form a chorus of Munchkins and Ozians. With a live orchestra, brilliant costumes and a fantastic set, this promises to be a real treat for the whole family.
