11/05/2017 @ 08:25

A posthumous award has been presented to the wife of the late David Pugh, a former town councillor and mayor of Newtown.

The local historian is the first to receive the ‘Honorary Freeman’ award in Newtown.

A presentation was made by the Mayor, Cllr Richard Edwards, to Mrs Anna Pugh.

She said: “It is a great honour and one David would have very much appreciated. I am privileged to accept it on his behalf, thank you all very much.”

David Pugh was a well known historian in Newtown.

He gave much of his life to Newtown working on the council as Mayor between 1994 and 1996, at the Powys Theatre and with the history and civic societies.
He was an active and committed community member that published and edited the ever popular ‘Newtonian’.

Town Clerk Ed Humphreys said” “The Honorary Freedom of the Town is the highest award that the council can bestow. ‘Honorary Freemen of the Borough’ is a power that is very rarely used and is normally only awarded to local people who have in the opinion of a Council, have rendered eminent services to a town.

“I'm delighted to be Town Clerk at the time the town council initiates the scheme, and makes its first award. It' a first for Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, and I hope will recognise and reward citizens' for their contributions and encourage others.”
