Conservatives take three of five Newtown county wards

The Conservatives have taken three of the five Powys County Council seats in Newtown.

Ballot papers for the seats were counted at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells after Thursday’s local government elections, revealing the Conservatives taking three seats the Liberal Democrats and an independent taking one each.

The only Newtown Town Council seat to be contested is yet to be announced.

The Newtown Llanllwchaiarn North seat was won by Mark Daniel Rowlands (Cons) with 449 votes, followed by Derry Quinlan (Lib Dems) on 213 votes and Roy Allan Norris (Plaid Cymru) with 87 votes.

Newtown Llanllwchaiarn West was won by Mark Antony Barnes (Cons) with 311 votes, followed by Peter Leslie Hough (Lib Dems) on 247 votes, Emyr Sean Poole (Plaid Cymru), 87 votes and Richard John White (Ind), 39 votes.

Newtown Central was won by David Mark Selby (Lib Dems) with 369 votes, followed by Rupert James Taylor, (Cons) on 309 votes.

Joy Jones (Ind) was unopposed for Newtown East, while Newtown South was won by Alan Neil Morrison (Cons) with 203 votes followed by Richard Gerard Edwards (Plaid Cymru) 109 votes and Sharon Evans (Ind) on 58 votes.
