The first stage into plans to transfer land from Powys County Council and create a new riverside park, events area and new premier play park in Newtown have passed the first hurdle.

The Big Lottery has confirmed £47,500 of funding towards a development and community engagement stage that will consult with the community on the plans that are being taken forward by a consortium of community, sports and business organisations led by the Cwm Harry Land Trust.

Newtown Town Council has agreed to spend £30,250 to transfer 116 acres of amenity land and green open spaces, including Trehafren and Vaynor football pitches, Dolerw Park and the Town Hall Grounds. This land would be transferred from the county council to the town council.

The land would then be used for the riverside park, events area and new premier play park.

A development and community engagement stage will begin in March and run through to September with the consortium consulting with the community to build a bid for the £1.1m grant application from the Big Lottery Fund.
