Youngsters interested in music, arts and comedy are to be invited to a new event being launched by churches in Newtown area.
D3 will open at All Saints Church on Commercial Street on 8 March with the church transformed for the night into a music venue hosting two bands from Liverpool.
The free event, aimed at over 14-year-olds, will include a ‘chill out zone’ at the back of All Saints with Fairtrade refreshments and merchandise for sale.
One of the organisers, the Revd Alex Mayes, Vicar of Kerry Church, said: “We’re really excited to be launching D3 in Newtown. It will be a community event enabling people to experience church in a new, different and non-scary way.
“All Saints offers a flexible space, allowing us to move the pews and create an excellent venue for bands to perform. We’ve already had lots of interest in the idea and hope to see plenty of young people coming along.”
The first D3 event will see Liverpool band, Cascadia Fault Line and artist Gary Maginnis perform at All Saints. D3 will take place every two months with arts, comedy and club nights planned for future events.
Alex added: “My partner George and I have been planning D3 for a long time and the idea is based on a similar event he held in Stoke Newington in London previously. I’d encourage everyone with a love of good music to come along.”
Alex and partner, George Bearwood have a long-standing interest in music.
Last year, they took part in a BBC 4 series the People's History of Pop in which they shared their divergent musical tastes.
While Alex grew up in the 1980s following Duran Duran, George hated mainstream 80s music and was a massive fan of punk. “The Damned were and continue to be my favourite band,” said George. “My most treasured possession is a framed front cover of Sounds magazine featuring The Damned in 1976.”
D3 takes place at 7.30pm on 8 March at All Saints Church in Newtown.
