The date has been set for the start of Newtown’s annual Winter Festival season.

Newtown Town Council has confirmed the town’s Christmas lights will be officially switched on with a Christmas procession, music, carol signing and entertainment on Friday, 25 November.

The evening will include produce stalls and others in High Street, charity stalls in Bear Lanes and other activities.

Father Christmas will switch the lights on with Newtown’s Carnival Queen at 7pm, although the evening’s events will begin at 5pm on a stage in High Street with performances from Maesyrhandir Primary School Band, NYP Theatre Group and Adiict Dance.

A Christmas procession, led by Father Christmas, will start at 6.30pm from the Town Hall Gates, heading along Back Lane and into Broad Street. Newtown Silver Band will accompany carol singing around the Christmas Tree at The Cross before the lights are switched on from the Bear Lanes Shopping Centre balcony in Broad Street.

The evening's entertainment will continue in High Street until 9pm with The Smile and a special Fireshow from ZU Aerial. The host for the evening will be DJ Tony Rowley.

For more information and stall booking forms, contact Zak Howard at Newtown Town Council on 01686 625544 or email zak.howard@newtown.org.uk

Santa's Grotto will be in Glanhafren Hall from 11am to 2pm on Saturdays 26th November, 10th and 17th December.

A firework show will end the Winter Festival on 31 December at midnight in the town centre.
