A Montgomeryshire Georgian country estate and hall built by a banker for his family and set in 40 acres of land is to be auctioned next month in a rare sale of such a property in Mid Wales.
Vaenor Park at Llanidloes, Powys, is a substantial hall currently split into three residences. The main mansion offers five bedrooms, while two adjacent properties, formerly part of the main house, offer two bedrooms and three bedrooms and could be incorporated back into the main property.
In addition, the estate has two cottages, barns and 40 acres of land with potential future development, according to Mid Wales estate agents and property surveyors, Morris, Marshall and Poole who are handling the sale jointly with McCartneys.
The estate was built by a Mr Benjamin Jones, formerly a banker in Llanidloes and who was elected the town’s mayor in 1839, but later moved to South Wales where he became a colliery proprietor.
It was then acquired by Edmund Cleaton, a local JP and chairman of the Welsh Tweed and Flannel Company and also a town mayor, who made extensive alterations and made the properties what they are today.
“You don’t have too many estates like this coming on to the market every day and so we’re expecting quite a bit of interest as Vaenor Park offers a lot of potential in terms what already exists on the estate and subject t planning, what could be developed there in the future,” said Tony Evans, a partner at Morris, Marshall and Poole.
“The main house is currently split into three dwellings but could be converted back into a single residence, making it a stunning home with a number of original Georgian features, including high ceilings, large sash windows and a cast iron veranda. The estate also has two cottages which are currently let, barns with potential for development and 40 acres of land which has potential development opportunities.”
The estate will be auctioned at 6.30pm on 30th September at Llanidloes Rugby Club. The sale guide price is between £800,000 and £1million for lot 1.
A second lot from the estate will also be auctioned, comprising 6.55 acres, used for agricultural and equestrian purposes. This plot is expected to reach up to £50,000.
