Police to wear cameras at Llani Fancy Dress

 - created on 17/06/2011

The latest high-tech body cameras are to be worn by police attending this year's Llanidloes Fancy Dress, Dyfed-Powys Police has confirmed.

In an attempt to make the event a "fun and safe environment" for all, and to ensure local residents feel safe, police will be using CCTV cameras at various points throughout the town and individual officers will wear the latest 'Body Worn Video Cameras'.

The force claims this will help reduce bureacracy as they will have optical evidence, and it will help to improve detections and 'streamline the criminal process.'

Vulnerable children will also be taken to police centres in the town for collection by parents or guardians.

“I would encourage everyone who comes to Llanidloes to enjoy the event and respect the local host community,” said Sergeant Jonathan Rees. “The Fancy Dress attracts people from across the UK and brings a fantastic party atmosphere to town.

“However, our main priority is to ensure the safety of the communities of Dyfed-Powys and maintain their confidence in the police service. And we will act decisively in respect of those who intend to behave inappropriately. We have in place a multi-partnership collaboration and all partners aim to deliver high-quality services and put the customer at the heart of the way we do business.”

Officers will be carrying out regular patrols not only around the vicinity of the event itself, but also into the wider locality.

“We have many elderly relatives in this area who need reassuring that officers are out there,” said Sergeant Rees. “If anyone has any concerns during the event, they can contact us at Llanidloes police on 101. “

Among the tasks being carried out by officers will be gentle reminders to revellers that any drinks taken to the event will need to be in plastic containers.

Officers will also be on the lookout for any vulnerable young children, who will be taken to police centres for collection by their parents or guardians. This strategy is part of the Do You Know Where Your Child Is?  Initiative.

St John’s Ambulance will also be located in the community centre for minor injuries and a Missing Person’s Bureau and Lost Property will be located at the Town Hall.
