Gregynog Festival is the oldest extant classical music festival in Wales. Set in the beautiful countryside of rural North Powys, Gregynog Festival features performances by the world's leading musicians in intimate historic locations. Each year the Festival takes a different theme as the starting point for its curation. The theme of the 2013 Festival is Great Britten, marking the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten who performed at Gregynog in 1972 as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Festival itself. The main events are clustered over two long weekends to allow visiting audience members to make the Festival the focus of a short break in Mid Wales. Making Festival débuts this season are the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with tenor Andrew Kennedy and horn player Timothy Brown (29 June, 7.30pm), the Ricercar Consort of viols from Belgium (22 June, 4.15pm) and the German early music specialists Harmonie Universelle (21 June, 7.30pm). Other star soloists include countertenor Iestyn Davies and lutenist Thomas Dunford (22 June, 7.30pm); keyboard virtuoso Mahan Esfahani (22 June, 2.30pm); and 'Queen of Harps' Catrin Finch (29 June, 2.30pm). Nicholas Daniel appears with the Britten Oboe Quartet (28 June, 7.30pm) and the highly-regarded choral group Tenebrae, directed by Nigel Short, gives the closing concert of the Festival (30 June, 2.30pm). 2013 also marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Festival by Gwendoline and Margaret Davies and the centenary of the poet R. S. Thomas who was Rector of Manafon, three miles from Gregynog, between 1942 and 1954. The season opens with a rare opportunity to spend an afternoon at Plas Dinam, the childhood home of the Davies sisters, in the company of their biographer Trevor Fishlock and the poet Menna Elfyn (20 June, 2.30pm). The Thomas centenary is marked with a day of events in Manafon, including a guided walk around the village with talks by the poet's biographers Tony Brown and M. Wynn Thomas (27 June, 2pm and 6pm) and a concert by the 'cellist Guy Johnston (Manafon Church, 27 June, 7.30pm).

The Gregynog Festival programme opens on June 20 with Plas Dinam Day, a rare opportunity to visit the childhood home of Gwendoline and Margaret Davies at Plas Dinam, Llandinam. Admission includes a talk about his forthcoming biography of the sisters by Trevor Fishlock, a poetry reading by Menna Elfyn, and tea or coffee with Welsh cakes.

The award-winning, Cologne-based ensemble makes its Wales début in a programme of 17th-century British music including Purcell, acknowledged by Britten as the composer most influential upon him. The Music Room

After acclaimed international perfomances this season from New York and Chicago to Wigmore Hall, Iestyn Davies gives an intimate recital of lute song by Dowland, Thomas Campion and John Danyel, accompanied by the virtuoso lutenist Thomas Dunford. The Music Room

Following his memorable Goldberg Variations in 2011, Mahan Esfahani returns to play works by Byrd, Gibbons and John Bull from Parthenia, the first published collection of British keyboard music. The Music Room

The highly-regarded Belgian ensemble is the first viol consort to appear at Gregynog and will also be making its Wales début in a programme of Byrd, Dowland and Christopher Tye. The Music Room

A guided walk, led by Professor Tony Brown, to mark the centenary of R. S. Thomas who wrote some of his finest poems while Rector of Manafon, 1942-54. In association with Literature Wales.

Music for a summer's evening, including Mozart's Oboe Quartet and Britten's Phantasy Quartet. Nicholas Daniel will also give a free outdoor concert at 6pm, including Britten's Six Metamorphoses after Ovid and commissions by Helen Grime and Mark Simpson. The world-renowned Academy of St Martin in the Fields will be performing at Gregynog Festival for the first time on June 29. At the heart of their concert with tenor Andrew Kennedy and horn player Timothy Brown are two of Britten's vocal masterpieces, Les Illuminations and the Serenade for tenor, horn and strings. The programme also includes Elgar's Introduction and Allegro, inspired by a holiday at Ynys Lochtyn, Ceredigion, Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge and Arvo Part's Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten. In this celebratory year marking the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten - Nicholas Cleobury and Mid Wales Opera bring together a stellar cast of speakers, singers and musicians - including Paul Kildea, conductor and author of a new biography of Britten - to explore some of his extraordinary characters and the wonderful music which portrays them. Includes a trip to the premiere performance of MWO's new production of Albert Herring at Theatr Hafren.
