Increase in trade refuse fees

30/03/2015 @ 10:11

Businesses in the area are facing higher trade refuse bills from Powys County Council, but not as high was recycling permits, according to the council.

Businesses are being encouraged to take advantage of trade recycling collections that would save them money whilst helping boost recycling rates.

The council has increased charges for general waste to take into account what it says are the ever increasing cost of disposal including landfill tax.

“Trade recycling charges have increased slightly to take account of the collection costs, but these increases are substantially lower than the general waste,” said a spokesperson.

“Recycling with Powys County Council can be up to 50 per cent cheaper than sending waste to landfill.

“The price of a trade recycling permit has remained the same for many years and has been increased slightly this year.”

The trade recycling permit will increase to £125 per year in order to encourage businesses to drop off recycling at one of the five household waste recycling centres in Powys, which allows them to recycle a wider range of materials than the kerbside service.

For businesses generating smaller amounts of recycling there is a permit available for use at one of the many community recycling sites in Powys, such as those in supermarket and village hall car parks.

This permit has increased to £45 per year. It is a legal requirement for businesses to have these permits along with a duty of care transfer note to use these recycling sites.

Both of these permits still offer excellent value for money to the traders.
Councillor John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “We are committed to recycling as much of the county’s waste as possible and feel that the options available give businesses plenty of opportunities to fulfil their legal obligations to recycle their waste as well as saving money in these harsh economic times.”
