Students celebrate apprentice week

11/02/2011 @ 11:59

Conservative Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire Russell George visited Motor Vehicle and Engineering students at Coleg Powys Newtown as part of Apprenticeships Week.

He started his visit answering the questions of full students studying Motor Vehicle and Engineering courses. The questions related to current issues concerning students and local residents, including EMA, employment, transport, fuel and health.

He was then shown around the Motor Vehicle workshops and met with some of the first year Foundation Apprentices in Motor Vehicle. The students showed him some of the skills they have learnt on the course, including fitting a wheel on a vehicle.

Russell said: “It was great to be able to work with the Motor Vehicle and Engineering students and understand how they mix paid work with learning.

He added: “Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience and there are clear advantages for both employees and employers”.

The College currently has 120 Foundation and Modern Apprentices and 35 Pathways to Apprenticeship learners.

If you would like to recruit an apprentice or offer an apprenticeship to your existing staff please contact 0845 4086 253.
